Digital storytelling: exploring new ways of sharing experiences
In December 2006, the staff of Culturenet Cymru attended a five-day digital storytelling course. The course was held by individuals working on Breaking Barriers, a project that gives people in the borough of Caerphilly an opportunity to share their stories digitally.
Digital storytelling is a method of sharing personal views and experiences in the form of a short film.
The emphasis in digital storytelling is placed on capturing a snapshot of a person’s view of the world, rather than on the technical skills that are needed to produce the short film. However, the same methods could be used to present information on a website, resulting in a more stimulating and enriching experience for the individual.
Culturenet Cymru produced its first digital story while working on Their Past Your Future, a bilingual website that commemorates the Second World War through the memories of those who lived through it. In the story, Mr Donald Parker, who was evacuated from Liverpool during the Second World War and moved to Llanfarian, shares his recollections of that period in his life. The digital storytelling course was both enjoyable and informative, and the staff of Culturenet Cymru will look forward to putting their new skills into practice.
